Road base (base course) is crushed rock blended with fines so it locks together when compacted. It is used under driveways, parking areas, shop floors, sheds, and slabs. For residential driveways, 4 to 6 inches compacted is a common range.
Caliche is a natural, calcium-carbonate-cemented mix of soil, sand, and rock found across the dry Southwest. It is one of the most common materials for rural driveways, ranch roads, lease roads, and pads in southeast New Mexico.
It is usually less expensive than manufactured base and compacts hard when watered and rolled. Quality varies by pit, and high-fines caliche can get soft when soaked and dusty when dry, so ask your supplier about the source.
Quarried and screened to consistent sizes, crushed limestone is a step up from caliche when you want a more uniform base, a cleaner driveway surface, or material that holds up to heavier traffic. Fine grades with dust compact well for base, and clean stone drains better.
Larger angular rock is used to armor arroyos, culvert outlets, and channel banks against flash-flood erosion. Smaller clean drainage rock is used for French drains and around downspouts.
Fill dirt raises grade, fills low spots, and backfills trenches and foundations. Sand is used for pipe bedding, under pavers, and for leveling under slabs. Both are sold by the ton or by the cubic yard, so confirm which your quote uses.
Caliche and road base are widely used for pads, yards, and lease roads across Eddy County. For example, a federal surface use plan for a well in neighboring Lea County calls for a 6-inch rolled and compacted caliche driving surface. On federal land, caliche generally must come from a BLM-approved pit with a permit. Include your volume, site location, and any spec in your quote request.
Length × width × depth (in feet) ÷ 27 = cubic yards. Multiply by the material weight to get tons.
Example: a 50 ft × 20 ft driveway topped with 4 inches of crushed limestone is about 12.3 cubic yards, or roughly 19.1 tons at about 1.55 tons per yard. Confirm the weight with your supplier before ordering by the ton.
For arroyos, culvert outlets, and steep banks, angular rip rap sized to the water flow works best. Smaller rounded rock can wash out in a flash flood. Tell us the size of the channel and we can help you get a quote for the right rock.
4 to 6 inches compacted is common for residential driveways. Heavy trucks, equipment, or soft and clay ground usually call for more, often 6 to 8 inches or deeper. For engineered projects, follow the project spec.
